あらすじ

　巨大な頭はドロシーに質問して、嘘を言わないことを確かめた後、彼女が何を望んでやってきたのか尋ねた。

The eyes looked at her thoughtfully for a full minute. Then said the voice:

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

　その目は丸一分間、思案気にドロシーを見ました。そのあと、その声が言いました。

"Where did you get the silver shoes?"

「お前はどこでそのシルバーシューズを手に入れたのだ？」

"I got them from the Wicked Witch of the East, when my house fell on her and killed her," she replied.

「私は東の邪悪な魔女からこの靴を手に入れました。私の家が彼女に落ちて殺してしまった時に」ドロシーが答えました。

"Where did you get the mark upon your forehead?" continued the voice.

「お前はどこでその額の印を受けたのだ？」その声が続けました。

"That is where the Good Witch of the North kissed me when she bade me good-bye and sent me to you," said the girl.

「それは北の善良な魔女が私にキスした場所です。彼女が別れを告げて、あなたのところに私を行かせた時に」ドロシーが言いました。

Again the eyes looked at her sharply, and they saw she was telling the truth. Then Oz asked, "What do you wish me to do?"

　その目が再び厳しい目つきでドロシーを見ました。そして、ドロシーが真実を言っているのだと理解しました。
　それからオズが尋ねました。「お前は私に何をしてほしいのだ？」

"Send me back to Kansas, where my Aunt Em and Uncle Henry are," she answered earnestly.

「私をカンザスへ送り返してください。私の叔母と叔父がいる場所です」ドロシーは熱心に言いました。

"I don't like your country, although it is so beautiful. And I am sure Aunt Em will be dreadfully worried over my being away so long."

「私はあなたの国が好きではありません。とても美しい国ではありますが。
　エムおばさんがきっと心配しています。私がずっと帰ってこないことを」
