willingly『#97_オズの魔法使い』

あらすじ

　オズは邪悪な魔女の退治をドロシーに要求した。

"What must I do?" asked the girl.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

「私は何をすべきでしょうか？」ドロシーが尋ねました。

"Kill the Wicked Witch of the West," answered Oz.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

「西の邪悪な魔女を退治しなさい」オズが答えました。

"But I cannot!" exclaimed Dorothy, greatly surprised.

「できません！」とても驚いて、ドロシーが叫びました。

"You killed the Witch of the East and you wear the silver shoes, which bear a powerful charm.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

「お前は東の邪悪な魔女を退治して、そのシルバーシューズを履いている。強い魔法がかかった靴を」

There is now but one Wicked Witch left in all this land, and when you can tell me she is dead I will send you back to Kansas--but not before."

「今や、この地に残っている邪悪な魔女はたった一人しかいない。私がその魔女の死をお前から聞くことができたら、その後で、お前をカンザスへ送り返そう」

The little girl began to weep, she was so much disappointed; and the eyes winked again and looked upon her anxiously, as if the Great Oz felt that she could help him if she would.

　ドロシーはとても失望して、涙を流し始めました。
　アイズは再びまばたきして、切望するようにドロシーを見ました。まるで、ドロシーなら彼を助けることができると思っているかのように。

"I never killed anything, willingly," she sobbed.

「私は進んで何かを退治したことがありません」ドロシーはむせび泣きました。

"Even if I wanted to, how could I kill the Wicked Witch? If you, who are Great and Terrible, cannot kill her yourself, how do you expect me to do it?"

「たとえ私が望んだとしても、どうやって邪悪な魔女を退治するというのです？偉大で恐ろしいオズが退治できないとすれば、私がどうやって退治すると言うのです？」
