オテイのはなし（対訳）："KWAIDAN"

Nevertheless, as Nagao was an only son, it was necessary that he should marry.

KWAIDAN

　それにもかかわらず、長尾は一人息子だったので、彼は結婚しなければなりませんでした。

He soon found himself obliged to yield to the wishes of his family, and to accept a wife of his father’s choosing.

KWAIDAN

　まもなく、長尾は家族の願いを断り切れず、父親の選んだ妻を迎えざるを得ない状況に追い込まれました。

After his marriage he continued to set offerings before the tablet of O-Tei; and he never failed to remember her with affection.

KWAIDAN

　結婚後も、長尾はオテイの位牌にお供え物を続けました。彼は一日も彼女の事を忘れませんでした。

But by degrees her image became dim in his memory,—like a dream that is hard to recall. And the years went by.

KWAIDAN

　しかし、徐々にオテイの印象が記憶から薄れていきました。記憶に残らない夢のように。そして月日が流れました。

During those years many misfortunes came upon him.

KWAIDAN

　その日々の間に、多くの災難が彼を襲いました。

He lost his parents by death,—then his wife and his only child.

KWAIDAN

　長尾は両親を亡くし、その後に妻と子供も亡くしました。

So that he found himself alone in the world.

KWAIDAN

　気がつけば、彼はたった一人になっていました。

He abandoned his desolate home, and set out upon a long journey in the hope of forgetting his sorrows.

KWAIDAN

　長尾はひと気のない家を捨てて、長い旅に出ました。悲しみを忘れることを願って。
