あらすじ
その男の正体は琵琶湖に住むドラゴンの王だった。彼は天敵のムカデ退治を秀郷に依頼した。彼は自分たちを助けてくれる勇敢な人間を探していたのだ。

“I am the Dragon King of the Lake, and my home is in these waters just under this bridge.”
MY LORD BAG OF RICE
「私はこの湖のドラゴンキングです。私の住処はこの橋の真下にある水域です」
“And what is it you have to ask of me?” said Hidesato.
MY LORD BAG OF RICE
「私に何を求めるのですか？」秀郷が尋ねました。
“I want you to kill my mortal enemy the centipede, who lives on the mountain beyond,” and the Dragon King pointed to a high peak on the opposite shore of the lake.
MY LORD BAG OF RICE
「あなたに私の天敵のムカデを退治してほしいのです。ムカデはその先の山に住んでいます」
ドラゴンキングは湖の彼岸にある高い山を指さしました。
“I have lived now for many years in this lake and I have a large family of children and grand-children.
MY LORD BAG OF RICE
「私は何年もの間この湖に住み続けています。子供たちと孫たちもいる大家族です」
For some time past we have lived in terror, for a monster centipede has discovered our home, and night after night it comes and carries off one of my family.
MY LORD BAG OF RICE
「ここしばらくの間、私たちは恐れて生活しています。一匹の巨大なムカデが私たちの住処に気づいたのです。毎晩ムカデがやって来て、家族のひとりをさらうのです」
I am powerless to save them.
MY LORD BAG OF RICE
「私は家族を助ける力がありません」
If it goes on much longer like this, not only shall I lose all my children, but I myself must fall a victim to the monster.
MY LORD BAG OF RICE
「もしこれ以上続くのならば、子供たちを皆なくすだけでなく、私自身が怪物の餌食になるでしょう」
I am, therefore, very unhappy, and in my extremity I determined to ask the help of a human being.
MY LORD BAG OF RICE
「それゆえ、とても悲しく、苦境にあって、私は人間に助けを求めることにしました。
For many days with this intention I have waited on the bridge in the shape of the horrible serpent-dragon that you saw, in the hope that some strong brave man would come along.
MY LORD BAG OF RICE
「この意図を持って何日もの間、あなたが見た恐ろしいサーペントドラゴンの姿で、私はこの橋で待ち続けました。どこかの強くて勇敢な男がやってくることを期待して」
But all who came this way, as soon as they saw me were terrified and ran away as fast as they could.

「しかし、やってきた者は皆、私を見るや否や、怯えて全力で逃げ出しました」
You are the first man I have found able to look at me without fear, so I knew at once that you were a man of great courage.
MY LORD BAG OF RICE
「恐れずに私を見ることができたのは、あなたが初めてです。だから私はすぐにわかりました。あなたが度胸のある男なのだと」
I beg you to have pity upon me. Will you not help me and kill my enemy the centipede?”

「私を哀れに思って、私を助けてムカデを退治してくださいませんか？」
