あらすじ
温室の中から聞こえるメアリー・ハンプトンの挑発に、レナードの言い訳が始まり、その場が白けた雰囲気になった。その時、温室のインコたちが悲鳴を上げた。そしてその場にいた人たちは目撃したのだ。温室の中から彼らを凝視する獣の姿を。

“Mrs. Hampton—” began Leonard with increased solemnity, but he got no further.

「ミセス・ハンプトン---」レナードはますます重々しく話し始めようとしましたが、言葉が止まりました。
A breath of chill air seemed to rush across the room, and at the same time the macaws broke forth into ear-splitting screams.
THE SHE-WOLF
興覚めした雰囲気が部屋に吹いたようでした。そして同時に、コンゴウインコたちが急に耳をつんざくような悲鳴をあげました。
“What on earth is the matter with those confounded birds, Mary?” exclaimed Colonel Hampton; at the same moment an even more piercing scream from Mavis Pellington stampeded the entire company from their seats.
