Then Oz got into the basket and said to all the people in a loud voice:

　それからオズはバスケットに乗り込み、国民に向けて大きな声で言いました。

“I am now going away to make a visit.

「私は今から会いに行きます」

While I am gone the Scarecrow will rule over you.

「私が不在の間は案山子があなたたちを統治します」

I command you to obey him as you would me.”

The balloon was by this time tugging hard at the rope that held it to the ground, for the air within it was hot, and this made it so much lighter in weight than the air without that it pulled hard to rise into the sky.

　この時、気球を地面に繋ぎとめていたロープがピンと張っていました。内部の空気が熱くて外の空気よりも軽かったので、気球が空に昇ろうとして強く引っ張ったからです。

“Come, Dorothy!” cried the Wizard. “Hurry up, or the balloon will fly away.”

「来なさい、ドロシー！急がないと、気球が飛んでしまう」オズが叫びました。

“I can’t find Toto anywhere,” replied Dorothy, who did not wish to leave her little dog behind.

「トトがどこにも見つかりません」ドロシーが答えました。彼女はトトを置いていきたくありませんでした。

Toto had run into the crowd to bark at a kitten, and Dorothy at last found him.

　トトは群衆に駆け込んで子猫に吠えていました。ドロシーはようやくトトを見つけました。

She picked him up and ran towards the balloon.

　ドロシーはトトを拾って、気球に向かって走りました。
