a Ball of Fire『#105_オズの魔法使い』

あらすじ

　玉座の間には火の玉があった。その火の玉は自分がオズであると名乗り、ライオンに訪問理由を尋ねた。

The Lion at once passed through the door, and glancing around saw, to his surprise, that before the throne was a Ball of Fire, so fierce and glowing he could scarcely bear to gaze upon it.

　ライオンは一気にドアをくぐって、周囲をさっと見回しました。驚くことに、玉座の前に火の玉がありました。直視できないほど激しく燃えさかる火の玉が。

His first thought was that Oz had by accident caught on fire and was burning up; but when he tried to go nearer, the heat was so intense that it singed his whiskers, and he crept back tremblingly to a spot nearer the door.

　ライオンは最初、オズが事故で火がついて燃え上がっているのかと思いました。
　しかし、近づこうとすると、自身の髭が焦げるほど熱が強かったので、ライオンはドアの近くへ震えて後退りました。

Then a low, quiet voice came from the Ball of Fire, and these were the words it spoke:

　その時、火の玉から低い静かな声が聞こえました。

"I am Oz, the Great and Terrible. Who are you, and why do you seek me?"

「私が偉大で恐ろしいオズだ。お前は誰で、なぜ私を探すのだ？」

And the Lion answered, "I am a Cowardly Lion, afraid of everything. I came to you to beg that you give me courage, so that in reality I may become the King of Beasts, as men call me."

　ライオンが答えました。「私は臆病なライオンです。全てが怖いのです。私はあなたに勇気を授けて貰いにやってきました。そうすれば、私は動物の王様になれるかもしれません。人々が私を呼ぶような、百獣の王に」

"Why should I give you courage?" demanded Oz.

「なぜ私がお前に勇気を与えるのだ？」オズが尋ねました。

"Because of all Wizards you are the greatest, and alone have power to grant my request," answered the Lion.

「あなたが全ての魔法使いたちの中で最も偉大だからです。あなただけが私の願いを叶えるチカラを持っています」ライオンが答えました。
