オテイのはなし（対訳）："KWAIDAN"

One day, in the course of his travels, he arrived at Ikao,—a mountain-village still famed for its thermal springs, and for the beautiful scenery of its neighborhood.

KWAIDAN

　ある日、旅の途中で、長尾は伊香保に着きました。そこは温泉地と、地域の美しい景色で今も有名な山村です。

In the village-inn at which he stopped, a young girl came to wait upon him; and, at the first sight of her face, he felt his heart leap as it had never leaped before.

KWAIDAN

　その村の宿で、若い少女が彼の応対に現れました。彼女の顔を一目見て、長尾は自分の心が高鳴るのを感じました。

So strangely did she resemble O-Tei that he pinched himself to make sure that he was not dreaming.

KWAIDAN

　不思議なほど彼女がオテイに似ていたので、長尾は自分をつねって夢じゃないか確かめました。

As she went and came,—bringing fire and food, or arranging the chamber of the guest,—her every attitude and motion revived in him some gracious memory of the girl to whom he had been pledged in his youth.

KWAIDAN

　火と食事を運んだり、宿泊客の部屋を手配したりと彼女が動くと、彼女のあらゆる所作によって、長尾は若いころに誓ったオテイの記憶を思い出しました。

He spoke to her; and she responded in a soft, clear voice of which the sweetness saddened him with a sadness of other days.

KWAIDAN

　長尾は彼女に話しかけました。彼女は穏やかな、良く通る懐かしい声で答えました。
