It was the forenoon of a hazy, breathless day, and Dan Phillips was trouting up one of the back creeks of the Carleton pond.

　風のない、もやのかかった天候の日の昼前のことでした。ダン・フィリップスはカールトン池の裏の小川を上って釣りをしていました。

It was somewhat cooler up the creek than out on the main body of water, for the tall birches and willows, crowding down to the brim, threw cool, green shadows across it and shut out the scorching glare, while a stray breeze now and then rippled down the wooded slopes, rustling the beech leaves with an airy, pleasant sound.

　その小川は池の近くよりもいくらか涼しいところでした。背の高いカバとヤナギの木々が水辺に木陰を作り、猛烈な暑さの光を遮ったからです。時々迷い込んだそよ風が木々を揺らして、ブナの木の葉が優美で気持ちのいい音をたてました。

Out in the pond the glassy water creamed and shimmered in the hot sun, unrippled by the faintest breath of air.

　池から出た鏡のような水が暑い日の光にきらきらと光を反射しました。微かな風にも負けずに。

Across the soft, pearly tints of the horizon blurred the smoke of the big factory chimneys that were owned by Mr. Walters, to whom the pond and adjacent property also belonged.

　柔らかな真珠色のかすんだ水平線にかかって、ミスターウォルターズ所有の大きな工場の煙突からでた煙が曖昧になりました。カールトン池と周辺の土地もまたミスターウォルターズの持ち物でした。

Mr. Walters was a comparative stranger in Carleton, having but recently purchased the factories from the heirs of the previous owner; but he had been in charge long enough to establish a reputation for sternness and inflexibility in all his business dealings.

　ミスターウォルターズはカールトンでは比較的新参者でした。以前の持ち主の相続人たちから最近その工場を買い取ったのです。しかし、彼が商取引に置いて厳格で融通の利かない人物であるという評判を築くのには短い時間で十分でした。
