"Wait a minute, Dan. How was it you came to tell me this?

「ちょっと待ちなさい、ダン。私にこれを伝えに来たのはどうしてだい？」
You might have stopped your depredations, and I should not have been any the wiser."

「君は略奪行為が出来なくなっていたかもしれないし、私は何も気づかなかっただろうに」
"That wouldn't have been honest, sir," said Dan, looking squarely at him.

「黙っているのは正直ではないでしょう」ダンはミスター・ウォルターズを正面から見て、言いました。
There was a brief silence. Mr. Walters thrummed meditatively on the table. Dan waited wonderingly.

短い沈黙の時間がありました。ミスター・ウォルターズは深く考えるように机をコツコツと叩きました。ダンは不思議そうに待ちました。
Finally the factory owner said abruptly, "There's a vacant place for a boy down here. I want it filled as soon as possible. Will you take it?"

ミスター・ウォルターズが唐突に言いました。「少年の欠員がある。私は出来るだけ早くそれを埋めたい。君は引き受けるかね？」
"Mr. Walters! Me!" Dan thought the world must be turning upside down.

「ミスター・ウォルターズ！私ですか！」ダンはびっくり仰天しました。
"Yes, you. You are rather young, but the duties are not hard or difficult to learn. I think you'll do.

「そうだ、君だ。君はいくらか若いが、その仕事は大変なものでもないし、習得が難しいものでもない。君なら勤まるだろう」
I was resolved not to fill that place until I could find a perfectly honest and trustworthy boy for it.

「正直で信頼するに足る少年が見つかるまで、私はその立場を埋めないと決めていたのだ」
I believe I have found him.

「おそらく、その人物が見つかったのだ」
I discharged the last boy because he lied to me about some trifling offence for which I would have forgiven him if he had told the truth.

「私は前任の少年を解雇した。正直に話していれば許したような、些細な違反について嘘を言ったからだ」
I can bear with incompetency, but falsehood and deceit I cannot and will not tolerate," he said, so sternly that Dan's face paled.

「私は無能力には耐えることができる。しかし嘘と不誠実には耐えられないし、許さない」ダンの顔が青ざめるくらい厳しく、ミスター・ウォルターズが言いました。
"I am convinced that you are incapable of either. Will you take the place, Dan?"

「君がそのどちらでもないと、私は確信している。その職に就かないか？ダン」
