あらすじ

　ドラゴンを踏み越えて数歩進んだとき、誰かが秀郷を呼び止めた。秀郷が振り返ると、ドラゴンが消えていて、怪しい男がそこにいた。

At first Hidesato could not help feeling alarmed at the sight of this horrible reptile lying in his path, for he must either turn back or walk right over its body.

MY LORD BAG OF RICE

最初、秀郷は行く手に横たわるこの恐ろしい爬虫類の姿に警戒せずにはいられませんでした。引き返さないならば、ドラゴンの身体を踏み越えるしかなかったからです。

He was a brave man, however, and putting aside all fear went forward dauntlessly.

MY LORD BAG OF RICE

危険であろうとも、彼は勇敢な男でした。恐怖心を捨てて、ひるまず前へ進みました。

Crunch, crunch! he stepped now on the dragon’s body, now between its coils, and without even one glance backward he went on his way.

ジャリ、ジャリ！彼はドラゴンの身体に足を乗せ、巻き毛をかき分け、振り返ることなく進みました。

He had only gone a few steps when he heard some one calling him from behind.

彼が数歩進んだところで、誰かが後ろで彼を呼ぶ声が聞こえました。

On turning back he was much surprised to see that the monster dragon had entirely disappeared and in its place was a strange-looking man, who was bowing most ceremoniously to the ground.

振り向いて、秀郷は驚きました。ドラゴンはすっかり姿を消していて、その場所には怪しい男がいました。その男は丁寧に頭を下げていました。

His red hair streamed over his shoulders and was surmounted by a crown in the shape of a dragon’s head, and his sea-green dress was patterned with shells.

その男は赤い髪の毛を肩に流し、ドラゴンの頭の形をした冠を頭に載せていました。
青緑色の衣服には鱗の模様がついていました。
