あらすじ

　ミスターマクレガーから逃げ回っているうちに、ピーターは靴を両方とも失くしてしまった。しかし四つ足の方が速かったので、そのまま彼は逃げ切れるかと思われた。グーズベリーネットに絡まなければ。

Peter was most dreadfully frightened; he rushed all over the garden, for he had forgotten the way back to the gate.

　ピーターはとてもとても怖がって、庭のあちこちを走り回りました。庭の出入口への帰り道を思い出せなかったからです。

He lost one of his shoes among the cabbages, and the other shoe amongst the potatoes.

　ピーターはキャベツ畑で片方の靴をなくしました。そしてポテト畑の中でもう片方の靴をなくしてしまいました。

After losing them, he ran on four legs and went faster, so that I think he might have got away altogether if he had not unfortunately run into a gooseberry net, and got caught by the large buttons on his jacket.

　両方の靴をなくした後、ピーターは四つ足で逃げました。より速くなったので、完全に逃げ切れたかと思われました。彼がグーズベリーネットに運悪く逃げ込んで、上着の大きなボタンが絡まなければ。
