あらすじ

　ルシンダとジェーンが出かけて、子供部屋に誰もいなくなると、部屋の隅から物音が聞こえた。壁の下に穴があいていて、そこからネズミが頭を出した。

One morning Lucinda and Jane had gone out for a drive in the doll's perambulator.

　ある朝、ルシンダとジェーンは人形用乳母車でドライブに出かけました。

There was no one in the nursery, and it was very quiet.

　子供部屋には誰もおらず、とても静かでした。

Presently there was a little scuffling, scratching noise in a corner near the fire-place, where there was a hole under the skirting-board.

THE TALE OF TWO BAD MICE

　やがて、小さな足音がして、暖炉近くの隅でひっかく音がしました。音がした場所には、壁のすそ木の下に穴がありました。

Tom Thumb put out his head for a moment, and then popped it in again.

　少しの間、トム・サムが頭を出しました。それから再び頭を引っ込めました。

Tom Thumb was a mouse.

　トム・サムは一匹のネズミでした。

A minute afterwards, Hunca Munca, his wife, put her head out, too; and when she saw that there was no one in the nursery, she ventured out on the oilcloth under the coal-box.
