あらすじ

　硬いハムを諦めて、彼らは魚を取ろうとした。しかし魚も思うように取れず、トム・サムは怒り出した。彼がハムを叩き壊すと、その中身は石膏だったのだ。

Hunca Munca stood up in her chair, and chopped at the ham with another lead knife.

　ハンカ・マンカは椅子に立ち上がって、別の鉛ナイフでそのハムに切りかかりました。

"It's as hard as the hams at the cheesemonger's," said Hunca Munca.

「チーズ屋にあるハムと同じくらい固いです」ハンカ・マンカは言いました。

The ham broke off the plate with a jerk, and rolled under the table.

　ハムは皿を引きちぎって、テーブルの下に転がりました。

"Let it alone," said Tom Thumb; "give me some fish, Hunca Munca!"

「ハムは放っておきましょう」トム・サムが言いました。
「魚をとってください、ハンカ・マンカ！」

Hunca Munca tried every tin spoon in turn; the fish was glued to the dish.

　ハンカ・マンカはブリキのスプーンを一つ一つ順番に試しました。
　魚は皿にくっついて離れませんでした。

Then Tom Thumb lost his temper.

　すると、トム・サムが怒り出しました。

He put the ham in the middle of the floor, and hit it with the tongs and with the shovel—bang, bang, smash, smash!

　トム・サムは床の真ん中にハムを置いて、トングとシャベルでハムを叩きました。ドカン、ドカン、バシン、バシン！

The ham flew all into pieces, for underneath the shiny paint it was made of nothing but plaster!

　ハムはバラバラになりました。つやつやの塗料の下は、石膏だったのです！
