あらすじ

　ヘイスティングスが私の体調不良を心配するので、私は記憶が定かでない原因を白状した。最愛の女性を見つけてボンヤリしていたからだと。彼はその出会いに喜んでくれて、私をとがめなかった。
　その後、彼はもう一度自分の失敗を話してくれた。その話をまとめると、こういうことだった。
　彼はthe Gould and Curry Extensionの選択売買権を持っていて、それを自分の才覚で高く売り込み、仕入れ値以上の儲けを出そうとしていた。しかし全財産を費やしても購入者が見つからず、その選択売買権がもうすぐ期限切れになるということだった。
　ヘイスティングスはその権利を元値でいいから買ってくれないかと私に頼んだ。
